Lara and Jiménez, the leading Spanish names in the Order of Merit

José Manuel Lara, eleventh, and Miguel Ángel Jiménez, twelfth, are the Spanish players with major classification in the Order of Merit. Coinciding with the upsurge of golf tournaments in China, where major sponsors have recognized an important and emerging market for golf, the two Spanish golfers continue to excel in the European circuit, as was the case of Wen-Chong Liang after winning the Masters of Singapore last Sunday.

The victory for Liang is the second victory for a Chinese golfer on the European circuit. The pioneer was Zhang Lian Wei, who won the same competition in 2003 and who, for marketing reasons, was shortly afterwards invited to participate in the Masters in Augusta in 2004.

Recent champion Liang, who receives two years exemption on the circuit, revealed that he would donate the prize money from the Singapore Masters to support young golfers in his home country, an unusual, even unheardof, gesture of solidarity.

“Nowadays in China there are only two models for young golfers to emulate, myself and Zhang. I want that to change,” Liang told the PGA when explaining his decision to donate the prize, worth 140,000 euro. Liang rose to the sixteenth position in the Order of Merit in the circuit (list of achievements) which is headed by the Swedish player, Henrik Stenson.
